Darius Kasparaitis was born on June 17, 1973 in Elektrenai, Lithuania. He is a former professional ice hockey defenceman who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning. He was drafted by the Rangers in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft with the fifth overall pick. He played 11 seasons in the NHL, retiring in 2003.

Kasparaitis was known for his physical style of play and was considered one of the best defencemen of his generation. He was a two-time All-Star and won the Stanley Cup with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1991. He also represented Lithuania at the 1998 Winter Olympics.

After his retirement from the NHL, Kasparaitis returned to Lithuania and became involved in politics. He was elected to the Lithuanian Parliament in 2016 and has served as a member of the Lithuanian delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
