Darius Kasparaitis is a Lithuanian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He was drafted by the New York Rangers in 1992 and went on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, New York Islanders, and the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Super League. He was known for his physical style of play and was nicknamed “The Destroyer”.
Kasparaitis was born in Elektrėnai, Lithuania. He began playing hockey at the age of eight and later joined HC Dynamo Moscow of the Soviet Championship League, the top level of ice hockey in the Soviet Union. He played for Dynamo for two seasons before being drafted by the Rangers in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. He moved to North America to begin his professional career and made his NHL debut with the Rangers during the 1992–93 season.
Kasparaitis played four seasons with the Rangers before being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1996. He helped the Penguins win the Stanley Cup in his first season with the team. He remained with the Penguins for six seasons before being traded to the Florida Panthers in 2002. He played one season with the Panthers before being traded to the New York Islanders.
Kasparaitis spent three seasons with the Islanders before signing with Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Russian Super League. He played two seasons with Lokomotiv before returning to the NHL to play with the Rangers for one final season. He retired from professional hockey in 2009.
Kasparaitis was a member of the Lithuanian national team and represented his country at the 1992 Winter Olympics and the 1998 Winter Olympics. He was inducted into the Lithuanian Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
